PSHE and Values Education:
At Zouch, we believe that helping children grow into happy, confident and responsible individuals is just as important as their academic learning. PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and values education are at the heart of our school community and support children in developing the skills they need for life.
As a values-based school, we encourage children to live out our core values every day. Through assemblies, class discussions and learning experiences, children explore the importance of:
Respect, Friendship, Honesty, Responsibility, Patience, Happiness, Trust, Courage, Caring, Understanding, Thoughtfulness and Appreciation.
Our PSHE curriculum helps children to understand themselves and others, build positive relationships, manage their emotions and make safe, informed choices. We provide opportunities for pupils to take part in activities both within school and the wider community, helping them to develop confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.
Safeguarding is an important part of our PSHE curriculum. Through age-appropriate learning, children are taught how to stay safe, look after their physical and mental wellbeing, and know where to seek help and support when they need it.
By working closely with families, we aim to ensure that every child leave's Zouch with the knowledge, values and confidence they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Our PSHE Curriculum:
We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme, which is fully aligned with the Department for Education's statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and Health Education. Alongside this, we use the Thrive approach to support the emotional wellbeing and personal development of every child.
These sessions are taught by the class teacher, as part of our Inner Curriculum. Jigsaw provides a consistent, progressive curriculum that helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive both in school and beyond. Through engaging and age-appropriate lessons, pupils learn about themselves, their relationships, their health and wellbeing, and their place in the wider world.
Each half-term, children explore one of six key themes:
Autumn 1 - Being Me in My World:
Understanding rights, responsibilities, belonging and making positive choices.
Autumn 2 - Celebrating Difference:
Promoting respect, inclusion, kindness and understanding of others.
Spring 1 - Dreams and Goals:
Building resilience, setting goals and developing a positive attitude towards achievement.
Spring 2 - Healthy Me:
Learning about physical health, emotional wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.
Summer 1 - Relationships:
Developing positive relationships, communication skills and understanding different types of families and friendships.
Summer 2: Changing Me:
Exploring personal growth, change and transition in an age-appropriate way.
The Thrive approach complements our PSHE curriculum by helping children develop emotional resilience, confidence and social skills. Together, Jigsaw and Thrive ensure that every child feels valued, supported and equipped with the life skills needed to flourish both now and in the future.
Assessment:
In PSHE, we regularly check children's understanding through class discussions, activities and everyday learning. This helps teachers to celebrate achievements, identify any areas where children may need additional support, and tailor lessons to meet their needs.
Teachers review and record each child's progress throughout the year, ensuring that learning builds over time and that all pupils continue to develop important life skills and knowledge.
At key points in the curriculum, children may also take part in simple end-of-unit tasks or reflections. These help teachers understand what pupils have learned and ensure they are confident in applying their knowledge and skills to real-life situations.
Assessing Progress in PSHE:
We believe that every child develops at their own pace, so assessment in PSHE is designed to support and celebrate each child's personal growth and understanding.
Teachers monitor pupils' progress through everyday lessons, discussions and activities, building a clear picture of how children are developing their knowledge, skills and understanding. This ongoing assessment helps teachers to plan learning that meets the needs of all pupils and supports them in making continued progress.
Children's progress is reviewed regularly throughout the year, allowing teachers to recognise achievements and identify any areas where further support may be beneficial.
At key points within the PSHE curriculum, pupils may also complete short reflection activities or end-of-unit tasks. These provide opportunities for children to demonstrate what they have learned and help teachers ensure that key knowledge and life skills have been securely understood and applied.
