Cyber-Bullying – POLITE

Wiltshire Police are pleased to tell you that your Local Neighbourhood Policing Team has recently delivered a cyber-bullying ‘POLITE’ language lesson plan to your Year 5/6 children.

Following increasing reports from schools and parents that younger and younger children are bullying others using mobile phones, apps, social networking sites and emails, we have devised a targeted lesson plan around the use of appropriate language. We aim to reduce the number of cyber-bullying incidents through the use of the POLITE mnemonic.

We have been encouraging your children to think carefully about their choice of language when using mobile technology. We want the to consider if their messages will cause another to be upset or distressed. To think before the press send and to re-read the message. And to expect a nice reply!

P- Prepare- think about the content of the message and whether it could be misunderstood.

O- Only send when you have re-read and checked the content

L- Look again- could your message upset anyone?

I – I would be happy to receive this message- that’s a good thing!

T- Talk face to face- sometimes it may be easier to say what you mean

E – Expect a nice reply – we all want to receive nice messages and comments

We understand that parents are often unsure of where to, or how to, access help to safeguard their children, we have provided a few websites which offer support and advice:

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is run by the INSAFE network and is celebrated every year across Europe, and in other countries worldwide.

In the UK, Safer Internet Day is organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre (www.saferinternet.org.uk), and this year’s theme is “Let’s create a better internet together.” Childnet International, who form part of the UK Safer Internet Centre, have produced an online safety presentation to help schools, parents and carers to support children and young people online.

To celebrate the many positives of the internet, and to raise awareness of the issues that children and young people face online today, we are focusing across the whole school on internet safety and promoting positive internet use. We believe that internet safety education is a crucial element of the curriculum and an essential part of our children’s development. On our website we have uploaded a number of resources for you to access to support your child/ that are designed to help you become more aware of the safety messages that your children receive in school in order to reinforce them in your home environment.

The documents online include:
